Is Yeast Infection Common among Infants?

Infant yeast infection can also result if the mother does not properly take care of her infant’s vaginal area. Inappropriate bathing to your child can also result in yeast infection.

The yeast infection usually begins with a diaper rash, but does not disappear that much easily and do not heal like a diaper rash.

But, sometimes it is very hard to tell the variation between infant yeast infection and the diaper rash. It can often be confused with diaper rash as this area is the most commonly affected area in every infant. The second most common type of infant’s yeast infection is oral thrush in your infant’s mouth.

If your baby sucks your thumb or fingers, your baby can get yeast infection. If the yeast infection occurs in the diaper area, then you can use special topical ointments.

Symptoms of infant yeast infection:

In some cases, your infant can experience full blown systemic-candidiasis symptoms. But, those who suffer from Candida infection symptoms, the effect and pain on their life are very severe.

Infant yeast infection can lead to:

  • Infant colic
  • Blood in stool
  • Upset stomach
  • Constant hungry feeling
  • Constant nursing
  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Dryness

Infant yeast infection treatment and prevention:

You need more than a typical diaper cream in order to treat the yeast infection. You can find various topical over-the-counter ointments to treat yeast infection.

Always it is not possible to prevent the yeast infection. You can take some precautionary measures to lower the chances of getting yeast infection.

  • Change the baby’s diaper most frequently. Always clean the diaper area as possible as you can.
  • If your baby is already using antibiotics, then he/she is more susceptible to yeast infection.
  • If the breastfeeding mother is on antibiotics, then your baby is more likely to get yeast infection.
  • Allow your baby’s bottom to air dry before you are going to put the new diaper.
  • Use the anti fungal or anti yeast creams like Nystatin, monistat, or lotrimin AF.
  • Thoroughly clean your baby’s bottom after every bowel movement and leave it for sometime to dry.

So, it is better to take proper care about your baby’s skin. If the infection is left untreated, then it can lead to most severe disease.
