The view from your baby’s eyes

Though most baby proofing need not begin until baby is moving about under his own steam, in order to maximize safety, you need to look at your home through the eyes of your baby.

Assessing the environment with baby’s safety in mind is something that should be done on a continuous basis. Get down to baby’s level and see your home as she views it. [Baby Safety]

Be sure the surface that baby is on is secure and stable. Is there any objects that baby can reach and put in her mouth and possibly choke? Are there any objects that are sharp within her grasp?

What you need to watch out for?

During the first few months of your baby’s life there are specific things to look for to ensure that she stays safe.

Look for things that baby can become entangled in such as strings or curtains that blow close to the baby crib, swing or baby seat.

Also check for items that may obstruct your child’s breathing like pillows, stuffed animals, blankets or padding for her crib that isn’t securely fastened.

Smoke is another consideration. If you smoke you shouldn’t do so in the house where second hand smoke can interfere with your baby’s good health. Never smoke in the car with the baby either.

If you didn’t quit smoking when you were pregnant as many mommies to be do, you should consider stopping not only for your own health but for baby’s as well.

Sharp objects such as the antenna on your cell phone, writing implements or anything that can potentially stick baby should be stored safely away from the reach of your baby. Watch items that may poke her in your pockets and on your person.

Constantly check your baby equipment such as her seat, swing, bassinet and the changing table. Ensure that your baby is safe and don’t assume otherwise. The old adage is true, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” especially where your baby is concerned.

You can never be too diligent when it comes to the safety of your baby so monitor what objects and items your baby will be exposed to.
