The Adventure Of Having Twins

twinsNot long ago I gave birth to two lovely baby boys. The last few months of my pregnancy I was aware that I was carrying twins, and for that matter I thought that it would be right to have myself prepared for what was to come.

I got some literature, browsed the Internet, I even watched some shows that were supposedly produced to give you a head start in raising twins.

Now, when I look back at that I realize that they were not enough. Sure, there were some useful hints and tips every now and then but in general, they don’t prepare you for the ride you are about to have. And that ride starts right after your twins are born.

No doubt, the first thing that you are going to have to face is the breastfeeding. It can be tricky but the best way to deal with this situation is to feed them both at the same time. That is what I did, and believe me it saves you a lot of time and effort because you get them both fed and both asleep at the same time.

There surely are exceptions, one baby may need to eat more often than the other, and as they grow they become heavier but every time that it was possible to do it, I took the advantage of doing it.

After the feeding comes the crying. There are two of them, and very often, they cry at the same time. Sometimes it can be annoying, I give you that, but every time you manage to calm them down it is very rewarding because you can feel the bond of love growing, between you and your children.

Basically, every thing you do when you have a child, you need to do it twice for the same amount of time. You need to feed them, put them to sleep, change them, watch over them, and that is not all.

You will also need to stock on supplies every time you go to the market. Ever seen a woman pushing two carts loaded with the same baby products? Well, that was me, or any other mother of twins.

Double set of diapers, baby food, bottles, toys, clothes… I just picked two carts and I filled them with the same products at the same time so that I don’t forget something.

As they get older they slowly develop their character and their temper. Usually they are different. One is good, the other one is naughty, one has more energy than the other, one eats less than the other, one is more curious than the other, one is more jealous than the other and  the list just goes on. That was my case.

At first it was difficult to deal with it, but because these situations happen a thousand times a day, you quickly gain experience and practice so that you may deal with everything accordingly and appropriately.

One of the solutions is to hold their hands and talk to them. That way you have their attention and you have them close to you and you have them listening instead of asking, in one place instead of running around.

If you have reached this point with your reading, then you have probably realized that having twins is not a walk in the park. It is tiring, demanding and complicated.

As I have said, every thing you do when you have a child, you need to do it twice. But for it you also get twice the fun, twice the laughs, the hugs, the kisses and most important twice the love. Having twins truly is an adventure, an adventure that is definitely worth taking.
