The befuddled, dazed and sleep deprived parents of a newborn are likely to want answers to a number of questions; chief among them being, How many times will a newborn baby wake up during the night?
Well the answer to that is it depends. Some babies, whom you may well classify as the ‘Angels’ may start to sleep through the night (by which we usually mean about 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep during the night) within a few days of being born.
On the other hand, some babies may wake even hour or few hours, providing parents with practically no quality rest.
On an average, parents could well be prepared to awaken about 2 to 3 times in the night. When this happens, here are some tips:
- It may not be hunger each time. Sometimes it could be potty time. Check the diaper and then offer a feed; sometimes a bowel movement could make them hungry.
- Sometimes it could just be that baby wants a bit of a cuddle. Maybe he just wants to play In the middle of the night!
- Things are a lot simpler if the baby’s crib is in the parents’ bedroom at least for the first few days or months even.
