The Fascinating Process of Baby Stages of Development

The baby stages of development are a pleasure to watch. Parents should know what to expect at the different stages to watch out for potential problems and provide the child with growth opportunities. It is important to encourage kids to muster abilities which are within their baby stage of development. Therefore, you should understand the expectations of the child’s developmental level and suitably prepare an environment for thorough development of the baby’s potential.

Baby Stages of Development

0-1 month – Motor development

The motor abilities of a newborn including gagging, swallowing, coughing, blinking, sucking, yawning and elimination are usually reflexive. Environmental stimuli activate other reflexes such as startling, rooting, stepping and grasping.

At these baby stages of development, the baby sleeps in its fetal position with the hands in fists, pupils dilating and constricting, and the eyes appearing crossed.

1-4 months – Physical attributes

The average weight of the infant is from 8 lbs to 16 lbs. Males weigh more than females. During this baby stage of development, the infant gains about ½ lbs a week and grows by an inch a month. The chest and head circumference is nearly the same. The head circumference increases with ¾th inch a month in the first 2 months, and 5/8th inch a month up to 4 months for suitable brain development.

1-4 months – Motor development

Motor growth for baby stages of development may be characterized with a fading of certain reflexive behaviors and strengthening of others. The grasping and stepping reflexes will dissolve with matured sucking and rooting. The infant grasps their whole hand, although without enough strength to hold on. The hands will be open and the head and upper body will be raised.

This baby stage of development is also represented with increased arm movement, waving, clasping and reaching out for objects. The infant displays binocular vision, with their eyes moving together.

4-8 months – Physical attributes

The infant gains about a pound a month, gradually doubling their original weight. The baby is 27 to 29 inches long, increasing by ½ inches a month. With the head circumference increasing, these baby stages of development represent brain maturity. The upper and lower incisors will appear, followed with teething, drooling, chewing. The kid’s eye color also develops.

4-8 months – Motor development

Your little one reaches out to objects with both hands. This baby stage of development will be characterized with sitting upright, use of the thumb and finger pincer grasp, and moving objects from one hand to another using the whole hand or the Palmer grasp. They can crawl, rock, roll, and lift the head when put on your shoulders and want to stand up.

8-12 months – Physical attributes and motor development

During this baby stage of development, the body weight trebles by 21 lbs, although the height grows slower at the rate of 1.5 times the birth length. There are 4 lower and 4 upper incisors, along with 2 lower molars. Your tot starts exploring objects by poking, throwing or dropping them. They cannot put down things purposely, stand alone and hold to furniture for support. With these baby stages of development, the child is able to crawl through stairs and creep with the hands. They may even walk with help.
