Potty Training –2 Frequently Asked Questions

Potty training at times can be a daunting task. Here are some frequently asked questions about potty training a child –

potty training1. No matter how hard I try, baby won’t use the potty.

A. Stop trying. Children can sense our desperation when we keep telling them to ‘go’. So put away the potty for a while and revert to diapers. When changing the child, don’t show emotion or interact, so that he realizes that he isn’t getting any response or attention, he may ask for the potty again because that got him some attention at least.

2. Accidents with older children

A. Speak to the pediatrician to rule out any medical reasons for this. Some kids do this when a new baby arrives or to gain attention for some other reason. Rather than paying attention to this behavior, which is what the child is seeking in the first place, do not react at all, and let the child clean and change himself. Don’t give him attention and once he realizes that this is getting him no attention and is leaving him with the unwanted job of cleanup, he will realize the error of his ways and mend them.
